Buffalo Bill:
Master Showman of the Wild West
Returning soon.
William F. Cody was a Renaissance man of his time. In addition to being widely known as a cowboy, showman, and celebrity, he was also a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient; supporter of women rights; anti slavery activist; and defender of civil liberties for Native Americans.
Though while he enjoyed spectacular career success with his traveling theatrical show that re-enacted scenes from the American West, his relationship with his family was anything but, all thanks to his pursuit for career opportunities on the road. This is the story of how a small-time buffalo hunter would end up defining how we still view the American West over a century later.
Join me and my host, New York Adventure Club as we explore the life and legacy of William “Buffalo Bill” Cody — second only to P.T. Barnum as a master showman, Buffalo Bill was the first to capitalize the broad national appeal of the American West by creating a traveling show where spectators could see and hear this faraway culture come alive.
Our virtual journey through the incredible life and travels of Buffalo Bill will include:
- An overview of what the American West was like in the late 1800s, including how and why it became a fixation with people from around the country and world
- A look at the early years of William Cody, from serving as a military scout and buffalo hunter in the Midwest to his theatrical debut on the stages of Chicago
- The origins of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show,
- and its overnight success in cities like New York City before traveling

- A discussion around the Native Americans in the production, who were performing amid the backdrop of the ongoing American Indian Wars and forced assimilation by the U.S. Government
